Have We “Polluted” Christianity with Conservatism? (2)

January 27, 2010 · Posted in Civics, Faith, Politics

On Monday I asked the above question and received a couple of good comments between Facebook and the here.

Today I want to pose a question.

Is taking the position of low taxation an exclusively conservative position? or is it a matter of faith?

Obviously I believe it is a matter of faith which is one reason I am a conservative because I am a Christian.

I have much more to say on this topic but really would like your insight.

Chime in.

"Is taking the position of low taxation an exclusively conservative position?"

No; most anarchists (many of whom are leftists) oppose all forms of taxation, and many practice tax resistance.

"Or is it a matter of faith?"

This insinuates that it's a faith-conviction or a conservative-conviction – seems to be a false dichotomy. Low taxes can be a matter of faith; so can high taxes and no taxes. It depends on one's faith and convictions.

"Obviously I believe it is a matter of faith which is one reason I am a conservative because I am a Christian."

    This is a non sequitur;
1 Because you are a Christian
    2 you are therefore conservative
3 therefore you support low taxation.

1-2 is false unless you insist on an a=a form of logic in which only conservative Christians are 'Christian'; there are many, many Christians who are not conservatives.
2-3 is false unless a similar sort of a=a logic is formed; only conservatives who believe in low taxation are "really conservatives". See the "no true scotsman" fallacy.

So…I don't even know where to begin on this one.

Let me restate that, then, to make sure we're on the same page.

Because your interpretation of the scriptures leads you to believe that a low taxation rate is affirmed by the Bible, and because you believe that inherent to conservatism is the belief in a low taxation rate, you see your logical stance, as a Christian who believes in the relevance of the Bible today as supporting low taxation (and by extension, conservatism).

      Correct?

I'm not trying to be antagonistic at all, just want to make sure that we're not misunderstanding each other from the outset.

        Jordon I'm so sorry,

I was in a hurry and after I posted I thought to myself "that sounded a bit rude". I didn't mean it to be that way. I love the way you think and I knew you would provide the catalyst I was hoping for.

You are correct in your understanding of my position.

Excellent Jordan, exactly what I expected you might say, and exactly the springboard I needed.

I will respond more fully later, but let me clarify.

I am not saying your not a christian if you don't agree with me. I am saying I believe the Bible supports a position of low taxation and my being a Christian leads me naturally to taking that position. It is not a matter of politics for me but a matter of faith.

Thus I am a Conservative because I am a Christian.
